2322 Picard applies for admittance to the Starfleet Academy, however, he is disapproved. Yet, his performance is so promising that he is allowed to apply again in the next year.
2323 After a new application Jean-Luc Picard is admitted to the Starfleet Academy. During his studies at the Academy, Picard's interest in archeology grows. He is supported by his archeology professor, Prof. Richard Galen, and studies the legendary Iconians among other species.
Shortly afterwards, Picard wins the Academy marathon on Danula II as the first freshman, after he has passed four older cadets at the final hills of the 40 kilometer run. With this performance, he gets the attention of Admiral Hanson, who later becomes a friend of Picard.
2324 During his second year at Starfleet Academy, Jean-Luc Picard encounters the violent Nausicaans for the first time during a visit on Morikin VII.
2327 Graduation from Starfleet Academy. Picard is the valedictorian of his class.
Picard travels to Starbase Earhart to wait for his transfer to a starship. There, at the Bonestell Recreation Facility, a disastrous brawl starts when three Nausicaans attack Picard and his friends Cortin Zweller and Marta Batanides during a Dom-Jot game. Finally, a Nausicaan stabs him with a knife, severely injuring his heart. The quick health care saves his life; he is implanted an articificial heart.
Jean-Luc Picard is transferred to the USS Stargazer. In the following years, he serves as an ensign and later as a lieutenant aboard the ship.
2333 Lieutenant Picard is bridge officer on the USS Stargazer when his captain is killed. Picard temporarily takes over command. After the emergency, he is offered permanent command of the vessel because of his intrepid behaviour. He accepts and is promoted to captain. With only 28 years, he is one of the youngest starfleet officers to have been offered a command.
2342
During shore leave on Earth, Picard has a romance with the future Janice Manheim.
Apr 9th Picard (intentionally) fails to meet Janice in the Café des Artistes in Paris because he is feared to choose between her and his command. Shortly afterwards, he returns to the Stargazer.
2344 Jean-Luc Picard gets to know Beverly Crusher. Both become good friends, however, since Picard prefers his work as a Starfleet captain, the friendship doesn't develop to romantic relationship, although they feel attracted by each other.
2346 While the Stargazer is in orbit over Earth, Captain Picard spents a two week shore leave on the planet. He meets Miranda Vigo and has a short-lived romance with her.
2355 There is a fatal encounter between the USS Stargazer, and a ship of a race unknown up to that moment in the Maxia Zeta system. The alien vessel later identified as Ferengi cruiser, surprisingly attacks the Stargazer. Picard's ship gets so badly damaged that another hit would destroy the ship. In this emergency situation, Picard invents a completely new maneuver that will bear his name later, taking advantage of the sub-light sensors of the enemy. He suceeds in destroying the Ferengi ship, however, the Stargazer's damage is too heavy so that Picard has to leave her with the survivors of the battle. Together with his crew, he is stucked for weeks in the lifeboats floating in space before they are rescued.
2356 Jean-Luc Picard is court-martialed for the loss of the Stargazer. The prosecuting attorney is Phillipa Louis, who believe he is guilty. Yet, Picard is declared innocent.
