Description |
Spherical Borg vessel which is
identical with the traditional Borg cube in structure and technology, but much smaller. It
can support only a restricted number of drones and is relatively lightly armed. Therefore,
the borg sphere is mainly used as a scout ship, because in contrast to the powerful, but
more emission-intensive Borg cube, it is more difficult to detect it and finally, because
of the small size and capacity, a loss isn't that grave for the collective. Nonetheless,
all Borg spheres have the same systems as Borg cubes, organized in the same decentralized
way, like transwarp coils, plasma weapons and even chroniton generators enabling the
spheres to travel through time. Beside the independent Borg sphere used as scout ship,
every Borg cube has a internal Borg sphere that can be ejected through a circular space
gate and is therefore used as an escape pod in case of destruction of the cube. The first
Borg sphere to be sighted by the Federation was an escape pod ejected by the attacking
Borg cube in 2373 during the second Borg invasion. However,
since 2375, more often autonomous Borg spheres has
been detected in the Delta Quadrant. |
