Description |
Starship class of the late 23rd
century deployable in many ways, which is a successor of the obsolete Constitution class.
In the meantime, however, the Excelsior class itself has been used for almost one hundred
years. At the beginning, the prototype of the class served as a testing platform for the
transwarp project. Despite the failure of this project the series production of the
Excelsior class began shortly afterwards and the class became the most successful one of
the fleet. After the discontinuation of the production in the mid 24th century, there are
still currently hundreds of ships of this class, equipped with a standard warp
drive, in active service, some of which have been commissioned many decades ago.
Therefore, despite only moderate propulsion and defensive potential, the Excelsior class
belongs to the most reliable ones in Starfleet. |

2284 |
The Excelsior class prototype, the
USS Excelsior NX-2000, is comissioned under the command of Captain Styles in the San
Francisco Starfleet Yards. The ship is used as a testing platform for the transwarp
project, called the "Great experiment", and equipped with a experimental
transwarp drive for that purpose. |
2290 |
After the failure of the transwarp
experiment, the Excelsior is equipped with a standard warp drive and put into active
service. Under the command of Captain Hikaru Sulu, the ship is ordered to a 3 years long
research mission in the Beta Quadrant. Despite the failure of the original propulsion
system, the Excelsior is the prototyp of hundreds of ships of this class, which are still
in use in the late 24th century. |
2293 |
With the USS Enterprise-B, a
slightly modified variant of the Excelsior class is introduced. However, this variant
couldn't win through against the original version, and therefore in the following period
mainly the Excelsior design is used. |
2350s |
The production of the Excelsior is
discontinued. Nonetheless, due to its remarkable reliability ships, ships of this class
are still in service for many decades. |
