Description |
Multi-mission explorer introduced
in the middle of the 24th century that is mainly used for scientific, diplomatic and
combat missions. The Galaxy class was designed to be both a successor and replacement to
the older Oberth and Ambassador classes. The special features of this class are the
modular structure (modules can be exchanged or added), its enormous size and the
possibility to separate the vessel into two completely independent ships the saucer
module and drive section. After
the 15 year long application phase of the Galaxy class, the ships are used for military
tasks today because of their unsurpassed defensive capability. However, the
Galaxy class cannot compete with the smaller and more maneuverable vessels of the Intrepid
and Sovereign classes any longer. |

The Galaxy project is approved
after long sessions of theoretical and preliminary work by the Advanced Starship Design
Bureau (ASDB). Of twelve ships that were planned, six were built in the Utopia
Planitia Fleet Yards, however, the others were only constructed up to the spaceframes, to
be completed when necessary. |

The required performance data of
the propulsion systems are substantially increased because of political changes and
prognoses, but also due to improved materials and further modifications, which reduce
the predicted ship's mass by almost 24 percent. |

The first spaceworthy version of
the Galaxy class prototype, the USS Galaxy (NX-70637) is completed. |
2357 |
The USS Galaxy is the first ship
of its class to be put into active service. |
2366 |
After 39 ships have been destroyed by the Borg, Starfleet continues the construction
of the additional Galaxy class spaceframes to six more spaceworthy starships of this class
as part of the rebuilt of the fleet. |
