Description |
The USS Raven, Sydney class, is a
small research ship which has been put at the disposal of the scientists Magnus and Erin
Hansen by the Federation Council on Exobiology to facilitate their field studies of an
unknown species. After the contact to the Raven, which is on a mission in the unexplored
regions beyond the Beta Quadrant after their departure from DS4, has been lost, nobody
ever hears anything from the ship or its crew again. Only twenty years later it become
obvious that the Raven has been assimilated by the Borg in the Delta Quadrant. |

The scientists Magnus and Erin
Hansen are given the SS Raven by the Federation Council on Exobiology for their field
studies of an unknown species, the Borg. The Raven flies to Deep Space Four, one of the
farthest outposts in the Beta Quadrant to wait for the decision of the Council on their
planned research mission. |

The Federation Council on
Exobiology gives the Hansens the approval for their research mission. Starfleet is still
concerned about security issues, but they assure that they won't stand in their way. At
least, they insist on admitting the Raven to the fleet. |

|
The Hansens, including their four
year old daughter Annika, say goodbye and depart with the USS Raven from Deep Space Four
to prove their theories about the Borg. In the unexplorest vastness of the Beta Quadrant,
they hope to find and study a Borg vessel. |

After eight months of searching,
the Raven still hasn't detected a Borg ship. The Hansens already start to believe that the
Borg are nothing more than rumors and sensor echoes, when a scanner announces the opening
of a transwarp conduit near the Raven. A huge Borg cube emergy, which scans the Raven, but
does not regard the ship as a danger or object of interest and therefore doesn't alter its
course. |
|
|
The Hansens, on the other hand,
decide to adjust their course and speed to the Borg cube, tracking and examining the
vessel with a distance of 5 Mio. km. |

After three months of tracking the
Borg cube, it enters a transwarp conduit. The Raven follows its wake through the conduit
to the unexplored Delta Quadrant, which is thought to be the home of the Borg. In the
meantime, the Hansens have developed several devices to beam to the Borg cube and examine
the Borg at close quarters without any danger, for instance a personal damping field,
making them invisible for the Borg. Equipped with such a field, the Hansens study a single
Borg drone, named Junior, aboard the cube for some time in order to understand the daily
routine of the Borg as well as their purpose of life. |
|
|
The Hansens try to identify the
newcomers of "their" Borg cube, after it has linked with another Borg vessel to
receive more than 50,000 new drones. On the examination of several drones they find one
which has served in Unimatrix One, close to the Borg queen. Aboard the Raven, the Hansens
equip him with a transmitter and beam him back to the cube. |

The Raven is heavily damaged by a
subspace particle storm, with the multi-adapting shields which protected them from the
Borg being off-line for 13.2 seconds. Unfortunately, this was long enough for the Borg to
discover the ship and perceive it as a threat. Even though the Hansens have masked their
warp signature and have escaped "their" cube, another cube sets an interception
course for the Raven and will reach the ship within one hour. The Hansens try to find a
class M planet where they can make an emergency landing and leave the ship before the Borg
will arrive. |
|
|
The USS Raven has made an
emergency landing on a near moon in Bo'mar space, 65000 light years away from Earth, but
nevertheless the Hansens and their ship are attacked and assimilated by the Borg. |
